Some of us have no trouble falling asleep, taking as little as one to two minutes to enter twilight zone sleep. As in the case for all human functions, there is quite a bit of variation among us as to our capacity to sleep. Some are simply better at it than others, being able to dim their arousal switches with annoying ease and have their sleep center dominate within minutes. The vast majority of us take sleep for granted. It is just something that we do, like eating or taking a shower. But as we have learned, getting a good night’s sleep is a problem of major proportions for a substantial part of our population.

Optimal human health only exists if sleep is entirely healthy. More than fifty percent of Americans suffer from one or more chronic sleep disorders. “I am tired,” “I have fatigue,” “I have no energy,” “I am exhausted” are all the phrases used by people to describe how they feel when discussing a sleep problem with their doctor.

There are different types of sleep disorders:

    * Sleep Apnea – Between 70-90 percent of those who suffer from it are men, mostly middle-ages, and usually overweight. The vast majority snore heavily. The problem is a neuromuscular one that results in partial closing of an airway called the nasal pharynx while one sleeps. Apnea is Greek in origin and that literally means “without breath.” It is estimated that 30 million Americans snore, and of that, 2.5 million of them suffer from sleep apnea. Those who suffer from sleep apnea actually stop breathing as they sleep, perhaps as often as several hundred times per night.

    * Narcolepsy – It is a chronic neurological disorder caused by abnormal brain chemistry, which leads to a perplexing constellation of symptoms that may include on more of the following: severe sleepiness, vivid dream imagery upon falling asleep or waking up (hypnagogic hallucinations), waking up paralyzed (sleep paralysis), and sudden onset of temporary muscle weakness (cataplexy). The most common symptom is falling asleep at inappropriate times and places. Narcolepsy most often comes in the mid-teenage years and affects women and men equally.

    * Insomnia – Failure to get an entire night’s sleep on most nights. It affects one out of ten Americans, which is about 40 million. Insomnia can take the form of being unable to fall asleep when you first go to bed or waking during the night and being unable to go back to sleep. While insomnia can be very frustrating, it is hardly dangerous and is usually only a temporary annoyance. Chronic insomnia is often a symptom of a serious underlying medical disorder. Fifty percent of insomnia cases can be attributed to depression and psychological disorders, such as anxiety, stress, or grief.

    * Restless Legs Syndrome – The onset of an attack usually accompanies inactivity such as occurs on long drives, sitting fir an extended period, and in sleep. Women are afflicted more often than men because of a correlation with menses, pregnancy, and menopause. When restless legs occur during sleep, it awakens its victim, causing insomnia. Suffers are known as nightwalkers since they are aroused by their aching legs that they walk the floor night after night, an activity that tends to relieve the symptoms.

For each of us, every single day of our lives, the need for sleep is a powerful biologic force. Every twenty-four hours or so, we simply must lie down and rest for a period of time or we will be unable to continue to function. This regular requirement for sleep is so pressing, so demanding that, though it may be delayed or deferred, sleep cannot be denied completely. We all spend one-third of our lives asleep, it is a basic requirement of life. Sleep disorders mean poor sleep which limits the ability to function and to enjoy life.

Sleep disorders are very common among the babies. Among natural reasons, there are many other factors that may contribute to a sleep anxiety. Babies who are nursed usually wake up more often than those on milk formula diet. It is due to the fact that a mother’s milk is quickly digested than the other milk. There is no cure to this problem. Leave it to Mother Nature to fix it.

Separation anxiety is another major issue. Babies feel separated once they are by themselves in the bassinet. New born babies crave for mothers lap to ensure safety. Once they are separated, the start feeling insecure. Both parents can help each other and their baby by gentle petting once the baby is awake. It will let the child know that you are still there for them.

Sometimes, it is also the uncomfortable clothing that hides scratches and makes the entire body itchy. Use loose clothes on toddlers. Other kids may get an allergy due to the formula food. That is why Mother’s milk is recommended until two years. It not only helps with better nutrition but is proved to develop a strong immune system.

Small children are prone to dust, airborne and pollen allergies. It is therefore recommended, not to expose babies in open air for long intervals. Also, abdominal gas, teething and ear ache are the primary reasons behind an irritated child. Parents should be able to recognize such signs. Talk to your pediatrician about these natural causes. Things are most uncomfortable for babies if they feel hot, cold or wet conditions. It is imperative that your baby is kept under a controlled environment.

Colic is another disorder. Doctors think that half of the babies suffer from Colic. It is the condition of the body when an immature nervous system is not able to adjust to the new environment. Therefore, the body’s only reaction is crying. No, Colic is not an illness. It is just that your baby is sensitive and more alert to the stimuli in nature. It heals with the passage of time.

Having a sleep disorder can be very disruptive to everyday life. Sleep deprived people are usually excessively tired and sleepy. They tend to become irritable and very emotional. At times they become a danger, not only to themselves, but also to those around them.

Some people use alternative, natural ways to lessen the effects of their sleep disorder. Many people focus on diet and nutrition, while others use herbs and supplements. Still others believe in the positive effect of exercise, relaxation and sensory techniques, meditation or behavioral and cognitive strategies. Often people use a combination of these approaches to help alleviate the symptoms of their sleep disorder.

A healthy diet is essential for optimal energy and a restful sleep. Avoiding certain foods is as important as including others in your daily diet. Eating a wide variety of foods and drinking plenty of water will keep your body well- balanced and provide a more stable energy level. Avoiding food that is grown, treated or processed with chemicals, and limiting the amount of sugar and caffeine will also help your overall physical condition. Many foods promote a restful sleep and are helpful in relieving some of the symptoms of certain sleep disorders. Eating the proper snack before bedtime can increase natural serotonin levels. Serotonin acts as a natural sedative and is made in the body from the amino acid tryptophan. Foods that a re rich in tryptophan include chicken, turkey, cheese, cottage cheese, fish, milk, nuts, avocados and bananas.

Many people use herbs and natural supplements as an alternative approach to treating their sleep disorder. There are many nutritional supplements and herbal products on the market. It is important to know how a specific product acts on the body as well as on the specific sleep disorder.. For example many people with restless leg syndrome have an iron or folic acid deficiency. Taking an iron supplement may alleviate some of the symptoms of RLS. Many herbs are well known for promoting a natural sleep. A clamming tea of chamomile or lemon balm can be very relaxing to many people that suffer from a sleep disorder.

Exercise and relaxation techniques, whether used alone or together, can reduce stress and muscle tension. Many people that use these techniques to lessen the symptoms of a sleep disorder do these before going to bed. They not only ease physical tension but they calm the mind and prepare the body to sleep. These techniques include mindful exercise, progressive muscle relaxation, breathing exercises and yoga.

Meditation and visualization are also used by some sufferers of sleep disorders to calm the body before sleep. Two common forms of mediation are meditation on the breath and mantra meditation. Both of these types can have a positive effect on relieving stress and calming the body. Many people focus their energy on a healing visualization as a method of alternative therapy for their sleep disorder.

Sensory techniques that people use to lessen the symptoms of their sleep disorder are hydrotherapy, and aroma therapy. The two main techniques included in hydrotherapy, which means water therapy, are relaxing in an Epsom salt bath and a lymph stimulating footbath. Aroma therapy includes the use of therapeutic essential oils in baths, massage oils, room sprays, and simple inhalants.

Alternative behavioral and cognitive strategies used to combat the symptoms of a sleep disorder include improving a person’s sleep hygiene, stimulus control therapy and journal writing.

Alternative practices and techniques can help many types of sleep disorders. Often they are used in conjunction with traditional medication and practices.

Sleep is a period of rest during which the sleeper loses awareness of his or her surroundings. When a person falls asleep, all activity decreases and the muscles relax. The heartbeat and breathing rate slow down. The person slowly becomes less aware of what may be happening all around. The two major stages of sleep are the non-rapid eye movement (NREM) or resting stage and the rapid eye movement (REM) or non-resting stage. The REM stage is also known as dreaming sleep.

Click Here For Sleep Disorder Alliance Free Trial Now!

During REM, the brain and the organs become completely active in an almost similar way to wakefulness. As the name suggests, there is rapid eye movement. The blood pressure rises, breathing becomes irregular, and there is even a loss of muscle tone or paralysis. When paralysis during REM is absent or incomplete, the person is said to be suffering from an REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). For this reason, an REM sleep disorder treatment must be sought for.

With RBD, the person usually awakes feeling tired or fatigue, loses energy and mood, and has difficulty concentrating and finishing tasks. In some cases, serious neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease may develop. Relationships with other people may also be affected.

Because the main symptom of RBD is dream-enacting behaviors which may be violent and cause self-injury or injury to other people, the priority for this condition is safety. Although people with RBD need careful follow-up, its symptoms can be successfully controlled with medications. It is also important to diagnose and treat all sleep disorders early in order to prevent complications.

A good night’s sleep is essential to health maintenance and preservation. Treat REM sleep disorders now and get enough rest to sustain your metabolic needs.

There are two kinds of sleep: non-rapid eye movement eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. A sleep disorder (somnipathy) is a medical disorder of the sleep patterns of a person or animal. Sleeping is the on of the most important factor in life. The sleep disorder is mainly occured in between the age group of 30 to 50 years and olders. Most of persons must have sleep 6 to7 hours and teenageers are sleep 8 to 9 hours. We have been dealing with sleeping issues for a long time, both personally and professionally. Many people have problems falling asleep, staying asleep or simply sleeping well. The sleep disorder is mainly appeared in men (4%) than in women (2.5%).

A lack of restorative rest can cause accidents on the job and on the road; affect your relationships, health, and mental prowess; and make you feel generally “disconnected” to the world around you. Failure to achieve a normal restful night of sleep is often the cause of a great deal of misery for patients and their loved ones. Some people’s sleeping disorders are complex–commonly there are a combination of issues that need resolving, and for a lot of people it can take more than one step to cure their Insomnia or their Sleep Apnea. Sleep-wake cycles are governed by a complex group of biological processes that serve as internal clocks. An insufficient number of hours of sleep may lead to sleep deprivation. Some 40 million Americans suffer from chronic disorders of sleep and wakefulness.

Knowing whether you have a sleeping disorder is difficult to find out by yourself. However, it is important to find out if you are suffering from one in order to help yourself get better sleep and become more functional during the day. One sure way to find out is through a sleep disorder test.

Why You Need the Test

Most of us probably do not know what goes on even in our own bodies while we are asleep. A lot of people therefore may end up suffering from a sleep disorder simply because of a lack of awareness of the symptoms and the condition, hence a need for a good sleep disorder test.

There are several types of sleeping disorders but the most common ones are insomnia, narcolepsy and sleep apnea. All these sleeping disorder conditions can be fatal and it is believed that at least 1 out of 3 Americans suffer from a sleep disorder of some sort. At the least, undiagnosed sleep disorders could affect your quality of life, making you less able to interact productively with others and perform even simple tasks. The physical stress and drain of a sleep disorder could also be psychologically damaging, leading to feelings of intense frustration and helplessness. At the worst, a sleep disorder could either be a sign of an underlying medical condition or could lead to more serious medical conditions like stroke and heart ailments.

Taking a Self Test

Although you may not be aware of what goes on as you sleep, you can perform your own sleep disorder test. You simply have to look at your own symptoms as a basic sleep disorder test. You should be worried for example if you wake up and don’t feel refreshed, if you have trouble sleeping or if you wake up frequently at night or too early.

Observe changes in your own disposition and behavior during the day. A quick temper, irritability, lack of concentration are only some points to note in your own sleep disorder test. Take note too if you frequently meet accidents and if you feel sleepy during the day.

Products for Self-Testing

Insomnia can be tested with a sleep disorder test pack that can measure your hormone levels. If you are doing a saliva sleep disorder test, look for the hormone melatonin. Melatonin is a naturally occurring substance in the body that manages a person’s perception of night and day and the cycle of sleep and wakefulness. Some people with insomnia though may have lower levels of melatonin. A sleep disorder test that will check you melatonin levels will help you determine if you need to take added melatonin supplements that are available even without a prescription.

Professional Testing

If you are not sure about the signs and symptoms, a professional opinion may be necessary. There are many kinds of tests but the most common professional sleep disorder test involves a sleep study.

In a sleep disorder test done by a professional, you may be asked to stay in the sleep disorder clinic or hospital for several hours, depending on what sleeping patterns are being checked. The procedure entails wires to be attached to you in order to monitor your heart rate, brainwaves, and breathing. Qualified personnel will then score your results for your doctor to interpret. Your doctor will then provide you with the necessary treatment for your condition. A succeeding sleep test may be conducted to determine the effectiveness of the treatment.

Sleep disorders are often frustrating problems because of the way lack of sleep makes you feel. There are centers to help people with sleep disorders, but unfortunately most people do little to try to solve the problem. Many people refuse to check themselves into a sleep disorders center because they do not see sleep disorders as a serious problem and think they can get rid of the issue themselves.

Often, this is because most people assume the average sleep disorder is a minor problem that a simple over the counter sleeping aid can cure. In some cases, this is accurate. In other cases, such a casual attitude towards sleeping disorders has a highly negative effect.

For many centuries, sleep disorders were often quite misunderstood. In years past, virtually any medical condition was a mystery, but psychological conditions were among the most misunderstood. There is a significant reason for this: you can’t see the root of a psychological disorder as you can a physical one.

For example, if one suffers a cut and requires stitches, the physical problem and the treatment are both obvious. There is little debate on the matter and the ability to diagnose the problem is quite easy. With psychological problems, such as depression and anxiety, it is very difficult to determine the root of the problem. In many cases patients are misdiagnosed.

The reason for this is that mostly all psychological or psychiatric problems derive from issues in the central nervous system. Because of this, we do not see the origin of the problem, we only see the results. In many cases, the psychological condition ends up untreated and the person continues to suffer the effects of the disorder.

Consider the following: a child that suffers from a psychiatric ailment that may result in excessive sleeping will often label a child as “lazy.” In reality, lazy is a thoroughly abstract term that hardly provides an answer to a problem. In many cases, the child may be suffering from an anxiety disorder that is causing the excessive sleeping. Perhaps the problem could be from depression.

Perhaps there is a physical condition such as a thyroid problem that may be the root of the issue. Regardless, the term “lazy” simply labels the child negatively, as a way of shaming the child into proper behavior. (How an under-active thyroid can be shamed into proper function is never explained) This is where a sleep disorders center becomes valuable as a sleep disorders center can pinpoint the patterns of the sleep disorder and hopefully find a way to prevent it.

The Benefits of a Sleep Disorders Center

A sleep disorders center provides the valuable research of the multitude of issues surrounding a sleep disorder. As such, physicians can pull from this pool of research in order to properly treat the problem. As such, the benefits of sleep disorder centers are far reaching and helpful.

Many times you just need professional help to deal with any problem. Everyone needs coaches and mentors in anything they do. Getting help with sleep disorders is no different. That is why there is a sleep disorders center.

Everyone has problems of one kind or another, you need to be able to admit you have a sleep or depression problem, but realize that going to a sleep disorders center does not make you abnormal or “crazy.” It just means you have to get temporary help to get you the proper amount of sleep.
