In medical terminology, ‘Sleeping Disorder’ refers to a lethal disease that tends to disrupt the sleeping pattern of an individual. This irregular disruption in the sleep will not only affect the health of an individual but affect the mental state of the person as well. There are different levels of sleeping disorders, namely Snoring, insomnia etc. If one fails to have a sound sleep during night, then at a certain stage, it proves to be detrimental on his/ her physical as well as mental health.

Studies have revealed that sleeping disorder is the root cause of various critical problems like deficient cognitive, disruptions in the immune system, obesity and many more. It is therefore suggested that one should take a sound sleep in order to cope with sleeping disorder. Besides, for proper sleep an individual is recommended to follow proper relaxation patterns so as to overcome the trouble of sleeping disorder.

There is no denying the fact that if an individual encounters the trouble of sleeping disorder, he will surely feel impatient, annoyed, irritated and will suffer from a lot of other complications. So, it’s better to practice certain relaxation strategies that help in eliminating the trouble of sleeping disorder. Various researches in the field of medical science have revealed that regular practice of relaxation or mediation strategies enhance the secretion of melatonin in the blood of a sufferer. In fact, melatonin is often termed as an essential sleep-regulating component of which secretion in the blood enables the sufferer to take a sound sleep.

Relaxation techniques are broadly divided into two main categories. The first technique is referred to as ‘Biofeedback’. By practising this technique, your muscles will experience a great sense of relaxation which further offers you with a good night sleep. Another important type of relaxation technique is ‘Mediation’. This technique not only brings peace to your mind but will also allow you to lead stress free life. You can practice these relaxation sessions usually during the daytime. Regular practising of these relaxation strategies allows the sufferer of sleeping disorder to diminish the effects of stress level; thus sleeping properly and comfortably during the night hours.

It is usually recommended to practice relaxation techniques before making a preparation for sleep. Once you begin to practice these relaxation strategies, you will definitely find an important alteration in your sleeping patterns. These alterations include getting asleep quickly, properly and with reduced stress level. Under mentioned are a few guidelines, by following which an individual can surely overcome the trouble of sleeping disorder:
- Always follow a strict sleeping schedule at night. A sound sleep means enabling the person to take a sleep for at least 8 hours a day.

- Follow proper relaxation patterns during daytime.

- Follow proper eating schedule.

- Try to avoid the consumption of alcohol at night. Even small amount of alcohol at night may make it harder to sleep properly.

-
It can thus be summarised that relaxation techniques have played an important role in eliminating the trouble of sleeping disorder to a great extent.

A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor s book (Irish Proverb). However, getting to sleep is sometimes the problem. With all our pressures, problems and pains of everyday living, it is no wonder that millions suffer from sleep disorders. According to a national survey, 54% of adults said they have experienced insomnia at one time or another. Additionally, back pain, neck stiffness, muscle injuries and menopause can add to sleeplessness.

Today, pillows are not just something fluffy to place beneath our head at night. They are chiropractor approved, sleep doctor designed and specifically created to assist in pain relief, snoring cessation, spinal alignment, neck support, headache relief, joint strain pain, arthritis relief, sleep apnea and much more, while accommodating and stabilizing injuries and conditions. The basic sleeping pillow filled with foam or feathers is a thing of the past.

The fillings for pillows have also changed. Feathers and foam are still available, but new materials have been introduced such as buckwheat hulls, mustard seeds, memory foam and new types of fiber. Added to that are pillows filled with air and/or water and magnetic therapy pillows. These different surfaces provide different types and levels of support for the body and can, over time, heal and correct certain conditions such as degenerative discs, sleep apnea, snoring, insomnia, etc.

How often have you had to punch your pillow into a shape that supports your neck and is comfortable for sleeping? Most of us have had to do this at one time or another. Now, pillows are available in a variety of sizes and shapes. Listed below are a few specific pillows designed to aid sleep:

•	Econo Wave Pillow: this pillow has a wavy surface to allow air to circulate while soothing and supporting the neck.

•	Buckwheat Hull or Mustard Seed Pillows: these pillows can conform to any shape, come in a multitude of sizes, provide air circulation, help reduce stiff neck and insomnia and come in a variety of scents. Mustard seeds are also believed to relieve backache, joint pain, muscle aches, rheumatism or migraine headaches, while buckwheat hulls provide support and cooling of the head and neck and can help reduce stiff neck and insomnia.

•	Air Core Adjustable Pillow: a cervical fiber pillow with a trapezoid shaped center that adjusts the level of support using an air pump and can reduce snoring by correcting blocked airways.

•	AquaCore 3 in 1 Pillow: This pillow consists of fiber, resilient foam, plus and easy, fill to your level water cushion that addresses the cause of pain and restores proper neck curvature.

•	Leg Spacer: This specialty pillow helps relieve pressure and strain on the lower back, knees and ankles and helps relax muscles while sleeping by placing the pillow between your knees.

•	Headache Ice Pillo: This pillow uses medically recommended cold therapy in treating dull, moderate and severe tension or migraine headaches.

•	Dreamzz Magnetic Sleeping Pillow: Get a great sleep and wake up refreshed while sleeping on this pillow that produces a calming therapeutic magnetic field that soothes away tension and stress while sleeping.

Pillows are also available for neck support, back support and headache relief:

•	The Magnetic Lumbar Pillow is a half roll foam pillow that relieves pain due to muscle strains, sprains, sciatica and herniated discs by delivering a deep penetrating bio north magnetic field.

•	The Jackson Roll is a versatile fiber filled support pillow that provides comfort and support for muscle and joint pain, as well as adding curvature to your spine. (I can personally attest that this works to help relieve the pain of degenerative discs.)

•	The Soothe A Ciser foam pillow helps relieve headaches and neck pain.

These are just a few of the pillows offered on the market today, along with many others that address specific conditions or injuries. The response of the public to these specialty pillows has been tremendous and will grow in popularity as sleep conditions, sleep disorders and aches and pains multiply. Also, these pillows provide a noninvasive method of relieving and perhaps eliminating pain without medication or surgery.

Often we speculate why sleeping disorders are becoming an important subject in today’s culture. According to the website Wikipedia there is a sum of 14 different disorders ranging from eye twitching to restless legs. A number of these problems are treatable and even avoidable when monitored by a practitioner or dedicated health expert.

Sleeping disorders can be very dangerous when they go undiagnosed. A lot of people who suffer from this disorder face a lot of life threatening problems for the reason that having a sleeping disorder can unfortunately dislodge them from living your ordinary life.

Because if they are spending more time distressing about their condition than getting the right amount of sleep then this can really overtake them, and just make matters worst. The predicament with many people who have a sleeping disorder is that they are not conscious of it being a problem until they realise that it is affecting their job and daily life. A large number of accidents that happen at home or at work are also due to people with some kind of sleeping problem. Individuals who go through this can also develop clinical depression since they feel like they are not capable to do any of the things that they used too, if they have been diagnosed with a sleep disorder.

A test called the Polysomnogram which is used to find out and identify a sleep disorder so that specialists and doctors can chart a treatment intended for that individual person as not all treatments are the same. Every now and then people who have disorders such as narcolepsy usually have their brain activity measured to see where they are reaching peak points of sleeping so they can be treated since narcoleptics can not really work on jobs that involve them operating machinery or other things for the reason that they have to be on the alert and wide awake to know what they are doing.

Having a sleeping disorder can make people believe they are not normal, but this is not so because the problem can be treated through medicine.

The normal person sleeps between 6-8 hours, but the most anyone sleeps is 10 hours. Individuals who sleep more than the accepted number of hours tend to throw their bodies off due to the fact that as you would expect we sleep and awake when the day changes. You should get the right amount of rest because your immune system can stress out when you do not get rest which can trigger other medical and health issues from the need of rest.

In this day and age younger people find that lifestyles trigger the use of drugs, drinking, smoking, and a poor diet consisting of a lot of damaging food choices and a lack of exercise and maintaining physical health.

A lot of times a sleep disorder can be caused from sickness or from the medications used to treat an illness. Mental health problems, such as depression, can also trigger on a sleep disorder.

There are more than 100 different types of sleep disorders. They range in severity from minor to life threatening. People of any age, from infants to the aged, can be affected by a sleep disorder at any time of their lives.

As sleep disorders increase in the United States, so do the dangers that are associated with them.
Tiredness can lead to slower mental alertness and a slower reaction time. This can be a very dangerous combination. Between 20 – 25% of all serious vehicular accidents involve a tired driver. Many of these drivers suffer from some form of sleep disorder and may not even be aware of it. A large number of accidents that occur at home or at work are also due to people with some type of sleeping problem. Sleep disorder, combined with the cost of the accidents and illnesses it causes, results in the American people and the government spending billions of dollars.

Lack of sleep is directly related to many physical ailments and conditions. People that do not get sufficient sleep generally suffer more form headaches, sore joints and stomach problems. Often a sleep disorder is an underlying cause of heart problems, lung conditions and diabetes. Sleep disorders can also affect the mental well being of people stricken with them. Mood changes, anxiety, eating disorders and depression can result.

Many people still do not think of a sleeping problem as a medical problem. Because of this, many never tell their physician that they are having a problem with sleep. Even if they see their doctor on a regular basis for an illness or condition, they never mention their difficulty sleeping.

As the American public and medical community become more educated and aware of the symptoms, effects and severity of various sleep disorders, more and more cases are being diagnosed. Sufferers are being treated with medication, oxygen, cpap machines and even surgery. There are better screening methods and diagnostic tests which find sleep disorder problems earlier. Overnight sleep centers no longer resemble a hospital room. They are now designed to look more like a hotel room, to make the patient feel more comfortable. In some cases, due to computerization and miniaturization, equipment can be so small that some testing can even be done at home.

Sleep is not an option or a luxury. It is a basic element of living and of good health. If you think you, your partner or your child may be suffering from a sleep disorder see your physician. A sleep disorder is a medical problem that can be helped.

First thing to know is, what is Asperger’s disease? Before you try to treat a sleep disorder, or associate it with having Asperger’s, make sure you know that the child experiencing sleep issues actually has Asperger’s disease.

This disease is a neurological condition belonging to autism spectrum disorders. Most common effects are those relating to motor skills. They will be uncoordinated, and will have difficulty doing things that comes natural to most children.

Such as jumping, running, climbing, and riding a bike. But it is important to recognize the difference between this condition, and what is considered to be autism. Although sometimes confused with autism, there is one key difference, and that is in communication skills.

Those diagnosed with autism usually have problems with both verbal and nonverbal communication. On the other hand, those with asperger’ disease actually achieve a high level of communication, and speak very well.

The problem is, they tend to be very narrowly focused on a singular subject. They will talk obsessively about their interest and little else. They will actually excel in the knowledge of the subject that is consuming them to the point of becoming an expert.

Unfortunately, anything someone else might want to talk about, takes a back seat to his or her interest. This makes it difficult for them to interact with others who would normally want to talk about a wider area of interests.

Some other symptoms to watch for are, limited social skills, problems expressing themselves in a nonverbal manner, routines they can’t break away from that they will continue to repeat, and problems relating to their peers.

There is a better than average chance that if a person has asperger’s disease they probably suffer from a sleep disorder, more commonly insomnia. Children with asperger’s disease usually have a problem with initiating sleep, and the continuity of sleep.

This is do-to the neuropsychiatric deficit that is inherent of asperger’s. Of course this will more than likely carry into adulthood. If the individual is loosing sleep, then other problems will start to arise.

Daytime fatigue, loss of appetite, and possible depression are a few of those problems. All of these things should be taken into consideration when planning a course of action that should include medical help.

There have been sleep studies done with adults that have asperger’s syndrome. In those cases, sleep diaries were used to document all sleep habits. Included were times the participants fell asleep, length of time they slept, how often the woke, naps during the day, along with what their eating, drinking, and smoking habits were.

In the end regardless of each persons own personal habits 18 out 20 people had insomnia. So there does appear to be a correlation between having asperger’s syndrome, and suffering from a sleep disorder.

Of course always speak with a medical professional before trying to treat anything on your own. In this case you have two disorders to treat. First you need to take care of the asperger’s disease, which could be causing the anxiety that leads to the insomnia.

You don’t want to start taking, or giving medication to someone for an issue that might lead to more problems down the road. Consult your doctor, get the best medical advice you can, and be safe.

I have been to the doctor numerous times and tried a variety of different sleep medications and every over the counter drug and honestly nothing has worked, or even slightly helped me at all. Many don't believe that none of those things have worked for me, but the honestly have not. The longest I have not slept at all, not even a few minutes has been 10 1/2 days..has anyone else ever had this intense difficulty? I have tried all the normal obvious things like no caffiene, breathing excercises, completely dark room, etc. Nothing works for me, I just can seem to shut my brain off and stop worrying and thinking about things and sometimes I cry and cry and still no sleep. At times I feel like I am going insane. If anyone has ever gone through this and/or has any potentional helpful tips/solutions/ideas it would be very appreciated!

We presently live in a very fast-paced world where energy and speed are valued commodities. It’s no wonder that people try to cram everything they can into a single day, ending up having to get by on very little or no sleep at night. Because of this kind of lifestyle, a lot of people end up being unable to sleep at night because they are used to leading a very hectic schedule.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder faced by millions, and they are constantly trying to find the best treatment for this. Though some of them are successful, others are not. This may depend largely on the clinic treatment that is chosen, and also on the type of insomnia that the person has. To get things right when a person has this disorder, one must always ensure that the disorder has first been diagnosed properly.

The type of insomnia treatment recommended will likely hinge on the actual cause of the insomnia. There are many causes and the insomnia treatment recommendations generally vary with each. Let’s look at some of the causes and the potential insomnia treatments that can go along with them.

The type of insomnia treatment that works best depends on the reason behind the insomnia itself. This sleep disorder can be caused by many different things. For some people, it is a physical condition caused by hormonal or chemical imbalances. For others, insomnia is caused by emotional or mental issues.

Insomnia or lack of quality sleep is divided into three categories based mainly on the duration of the problem – transient, intermittent and chronic. Transient and intermittent are temporary conditions and most of the times, correct themselves with minimal informed effort. Alteration of life style habits that cause the problem should suffice. There are quite a few OTC drugs, mostly sedative antihistamines that are useful.

If your insomnia is still fairly mild, you may be able to treat the problem on your own at home. This might include changes to your routine, like avoiding a heavy meal or strenuous exercise too close to bedtime. You may try following a regular evening schedule that includes a late night bath or other methods for relaxing.

Medication treatment for insomnia is usually prescribed by physicians but there are still some over-the-counter sleeping pills you can take. However, it is best advised that you consult a sleep expert to make sure that you are not just worsening your condition. Most of the time, the physician will try to find out the underlying ailment or disease that could be causing your insomnia. This is what you have to cure for you to get back to your normal sleeping routine.

Another natural insomnia treatment you can try is yoga. As being mentioned above, insomnia can be brought about by stress and yoga is a very good stress reliever. However, consider only yoga poses that do not strain your muscles too much.

research saying that curing sleep problems are EXTREMELY complex. These studies almost always have two additions: a) that further research is needed (to pay the researcher for another study) and that b) a particluar drug made by the sponsor of the research is the only cure for this complex subject. Humans have been sleeping long before drug companies. And not surprisingly there are many natural cures for insomnia. This video pulls back the curtain on those cures. … sleep insomnia “sleep …
Help answer the question about insomnia sleep disorders
Can an average person develop Insomnia on their own by changing sleep habits or not sleeping at all?
I am curious to know if it's possible to develop a sleeping disorder such as insomnia by staying awake and/or changing of sleeping habits and schedules to very few hours if any.

Sleep disorders are very common among the babies. Among natural reasons, there are many other factors that may contribute to a sleep anxiety. Babies who are nursed usually wake up more often than those on milk formula diet. It is due to the fact that a mother’s milk is quickly digested than the other milk. There is no cure to this problem. Leave it to Mother Nature to fix it.

Separation anxiety is another major issue. Babies feel separated once they are by themselves in the bassinet. New born babies crave for mothers lap to ensure safety. Once they are separated, the start feeling insecure. Both parents can help each other and their baby by gentle petting once the baby is awake. It will let the child know that you are still there for them.

Sometimes, it is also the uncomfortable clothing that hides scratches and makes the entire body itchy. Use loose clothes on toddlers. Other kids may get an allergy due to the formula food. That is why Mother’s milk is recommended until two years. It not only helps with better nutrition but is proved to develop a strong immune system.

Small children are prone to dust, airborne and pollen allergies. It is therefore recommended, not to expose babies in open air for long intervals. Also, abdominal gas, teething and ear ache are the primary reasons behind an irritated child. Parents should be able to recognize such signs. Talk to your pediatrician about these natural causes. Things are most uncomfortable for babies if they feel hot, cold or wet conditions. It is imperative that your baby is kept under a controlled environment.

Colic is another disorder. Doctors think that half of the babies suffer from Colic. It is the condition of the body when an immature nervous system is not able to adjust to the new environment. Therefore, the body’s only reaction is crying. No, Colic is not an illness. It is just that your baby is sensitive and more alert to the stimuli in nature. It heals with the passage of time.

 “Bedwetting? Don’t worry, he’ll outgrow it…”

When “your baby” doesn’t outgrow bed-wetting

Bedwetting may not seem as serious as juvenile diabetes or a heart defect. But to Sam’s family, the sleep disorder that caused his enuresis proved almost as dangerous as any life threatening-disease.

The pediatrician said Sam would outgrow his bedwetting. But at six years old, Sam was still waking up in the morning with wet sheets and a profound humiliation that even his loving parents could not displace. Forget about the inconvenience and extra laundry. That was nothing compared to Sam’s diminishing self-esteem and his parents’ guilt about “letting him down.” Shouldn’t they as adults be able to solve this seemingly simple problem? Why wasn’t their love enough? Then one night, they realized that their inability to solve his bed-wetting was putting Sam in the gravest of physical danger.

On a trip to Colorado, the family stayed in a second story motel room. In the middle of the night, Sam was found outside on the balcony. Alone. Like so many other nights he had wet the bed. But this time, he was more than a bedwetter. He was a sleepwalker. Terrified about what could have happened, his parents decided that the ineffective “bedwetting treatments,” drugs, psychiatrists and waiting for Sam to outgrow bedwetting—were just not good enough!

They wanted to believe the doctor who assured them that Sam would outgrow enuresis. But what if he got hurt in the meantime? As the bed-wetting (and now sleepwalking) continued, Sam withdrew into himself at school and became more and more detached from his loving family. He was inconsolable.

Conducting one desperate Internet search after another, Sam’s parents finally found the Enuresis Treatment Center (www.nobedwetting.com). They “met” with Barbara Moore — the center’s director. By phone, Barbara helped the family understand that Sam’s problem was a sleep disorder, not about his bladder or anything they were doing wrong. Treatment began immediately. Sam’s personal counselor – Maryanne – set up appointments through email and phone calls and worked with the family every step of the way, bringing hope and results into their lives. Because they know at the Enuresis Treatment Center that each bedwetter is unique, a tailored program was developed just for Sam. It included bio-feedback and NO medication. Together with counseling, this protocol ended his vicious cycle of bedwetting and sleepwalking. In three months, both bedwetting and sleepwalking significantly decreased. In five months, Sam was no longer a bedwetter. He uttered three words his parents longed to hear: “I feel normal.” Now Sam has the potential to experience all the happiness and success his parents have wished for him. And they feel they have fulfilled their responsibilities as loving parents, thanks to the Enuresis Treatment Center (www.nobedwetting.com). To stop bedwetting for someone you love, contact www.nobedwetting.com. From the US, call 1-800-379-2331. It got to the point where i could not get into school one full day a week, i would average about 2 to 3 days in 3 or 4 hours late, but never in on time. I have talked to many psychiatrists and a sleep specialist neither could figure it out.

I am now on sleeping medication which helps me fall asleep (something else thats difficult for me) but its still just as difficult to wake up. Because of my attendance my only option was to get a GED and get out of high school before i was sent to a juvinile detention center for truency.

Ive been working incredibly hard to fix this for quite some time now.
Its not how much sleep i get, its not the medication im taking, its not sleep apnea, and its much more crippling than delayed sleep phase disorder.

about 5 times in the past 4 years i have woken up from a normal night's sleep and felt completely well rested, the few times that has happened i felt like what i think everyone feels like after a normal nights sleep. i woke up at a normal time, no longer tired, completely refreshed and ready for the day. all the other days though are miserable, its really destroying many aspects of my life.

if you have any information on this, please respond,
i am almost 17, ive been having this problem since elementary school, id say it started in 5th grade.

The treatment is related to the cause, if the cause can be determined. If there is an obvious physical or psychological disorder causing insomnia, it should be treated. Depression is a very common cause of insomnia and can usually be treated with medication, cognitive behavioral therapy, or interpersonal therapy.

In addition, oral appliance therapy, positional therapy, somnoplasty, laser surgery or UP3 (where the tissue at the back of the throat is removed) are other ways to help sleep apnea patients attain restful sleep.

The tendency to be early to bed and early to rise increases as we grow older. Most persons adapt successfully but some of us find that our bodies say, “It’s bedtime,” earlier than we desire – often well before 9 p.m. Known as advanced sleep phase syndrome (or ASPS) this problem can wreck havoc with social life. Most persons with ASPS try numerous strategies to help them stay awake. Even if they succeed in pushing bedtime later, they may not be able to sleep any later because their body clocks still awaken them in the early morning hours.

Evidence suggests that melatonin is not effective in treating most primary sleep disorders with short-term use, although there is some evidence to suggest that melatonin is effective in treating delayed sleep phase syndrome with short-term use.

Natural remedies have been used for years to treat sleep disorders. One of the most popular “natural” remedies for insomnia has been melatonin, which can be obtained at most pharmacies and health food stores. Melatonin is a hormone that is known to be involved in the regulation of sleep and wakefulness. It has been shown that the ingestion of melatonin prior to bedtime will help individuals fall asleep. However, scientific data have failed to confirm that melatonin is useful in maintaining sleep.

You can address most common sleep problems through lifestyle changes and improved sleep hygiene but it is important to see your doctor or a sleep specialist for a diagnosis if your sleep does not improve. A doctor who specializes in sleep problems is most skilled in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. Sometimes sleep specialists work out of a sleep center; others are independent.

To determine if you have a sleep disorder, first pay attention to your sleep habits and daily routine. Whether you are trying to help yourself or planning to visit a doctor, it is helpful to record your sleep habits. Your sleep history will help you and your doctor find the cause of your sleep problems.

Your primary-care physician may be able to deal with depression as a temporary side effect or the everyday blues, but it’s a psychiatrist who is trained in the ins and outs of major depression and its treatment, and it’s a psychiatrist who is most able to suggest the treatment option that, tailored to your particular situation and combination of issues, is most likely to succeed.

Regularize your sleep hours. Irregular sleep hours can throw off your sleep cycles and lead to breathing problems during the most important sleep stages. Stabilizing bedtime hours and eliminating disturbances to your sleep can reduce sleep apnea.

Eliminate the use of alcohol, tobacco, and sedatives such as sleeping pills. Avoiding the use of alcohol, tobacco, and sleeping pills can reduce the likelihood of airway closure during the night.

Having a sleep disorder can be very disruptive to everyday life. Sleep deprived people are usually excessively tired and sleepy. They tend to become irritable and very emotional. At times they become a danger, not only to themselves, but also to those around them.

Some people use alternative, natural ways to lessen the effects of their sleep disorder. Many people focus on diet and nutrition, while others use herbs and supplements. Still others believe in the positive effect of exercise, relaxation and sensory techniques, meditation or behavioral and cognitive strategies. Often people use a combination of these approaches to help alleviate the symptoms of their sleep disorder.

A healthy diet is essential for optimal energy and a restful sleep. Avoiding certain foods is as important as including others in your daily diet. Eating a wide variety of foods and drinking plenty of water will keep your body well- balanced and provide a more stable energy level. Avoiding food that is grown, treated or processed with chemicals, and limiting the amount of sugar and caffeine will also help your overall physical condition. Many foods promote a restful sleep and are helpful in relieving some of the symptoms of certain sleep disorders. Eating the proper snack before bedtime can increase natural serotonin levels. Serotonin acts as a natural sedative and is made in the body from the amino acid tryptophan. Foods that a re rich in tryptophan include chicken, turkey, cheese, cottage cheese, fish, milk, nuts, avocados and bananas.

Many people use herbs and natural supplements as an alternative approach to treating their sleep disorder. There are many nutritional supplements and herbal products on the market. It is important to know how a specific product acts on the body as well as on the specific sleep disorder.. For example many people with restless leg syndrome have an iron or folic acid deficiency. Taking an iron supplement may alleviate some of the symptoms of RLS. Many herbs are well known for promoting a natural sleep. A clamming tea of chamomile or lemon balm can be very relaxing to many people that suffer from a sleep disorder.

Exercise and relaxation techniques, whether used alone or together, can reduce stress and muscle tension. Many people that use these techniques to lessen the symptoms of a sleep disorder do these before going to bed. They not only ease physical tension but they calm the mind and prepare the body to sleep. These techniques include mindful exercise, progressive muscle relaxation, breathing exercises and yoga.

Meditation and visualization are also used by some sufferers of sleep disorders to calm the body before sleep. Two common forms of mediation are meditation on the breath and mantra meditation. Both of these types can have a positive effect on relieving stress and calming the body. Many people focus their energy on a healing visualization as a method of alternative therapy for their sleep disorder.

Sensory techniques that people use to lessen the symptoms of their sleep disorder are hydrotherapy, and aroma therapy. The two main techniques included in hydrotherapy, which means water therapy, are relaxing in an Epsom salt bath and a lymph stimulating footbath. Aroma therapy includes the use of therapeutic essential oils in baths, massage oils, room sprays, and simple inhalants.

Alternative behavioral and cognitive strategies used to combat the symptoms of a sleep disorder include improving a person’s sleep hygiene, stimulus control therapy and journal writing.

Alternative practices and techniques can help many types of sleep disorders. Often they are used in conjunction with traditional medication and practices.
