It hurts to see someone who's helped you gradually kill themselves with constant suicide, especially whenever they don't see the issue, or at least have no real desire to rectify it. There's only so much you can do or say to him. I don't know if counseling is an option, I know it's expensive, with or without insurance. You've tried talking to him, sneaking in exercise... etc. You're a good woman for trying. I don't know if I missed it or not, but what's his reaction when you tell him flat-out how you feel about his condition? Is he concerned in response, indifferent, thinks you're overreacting, etc.? You'd think he'd at least humor you and give it a shot.

Addendum: Sorry, took me a while to get back to this question. His responses are... I don't know. My mind goes to extreme measures as being a solution, but I've never been in your position verbatim, so I don't feel completely adequate in giving you advice. Whatever you so choose, I wish you and he luck in the end-result.

Not a tool fan, but this makes me think about how cool IRON MAIDEN's "ACES HIGH" would sound with this! Nice job!

Very vivid dreams when asleep for 5 minutes is indeed suggestive of narcolepsy. The gold standard sleep study for narcolepsy is a multiple sleep latency test, where they give you 5 opportunities to take a nap and record how quickly you fall asleep and how quickly you enter REM (aka dream) sleep.

As you have likely discovered in your research, Narcolepsy is thought to be very under diagnosed (and frequently misdiagnosed). I would suggest you have a sleep study with a multiple sleep latency test done largely for pharmacological reasons.

Ritalin is a drug with good use, but I've found others to be more useful (like Concerta and Provigil). SSRI's (like many anti-depressants) can suppress REM sleep, including in your waking life. (In other words, less frequent automatic behaviors where you do things you don't remember doing). That aspect is separate from just level of alertness, but make a big difference in quality of life.

Best of luck.

It does sound sub-conscious. We let our sub-conscious negative thoughts over take us. Part of the problem is changing your sub-conscious thinking. Start telling yourself before bed that you feel good and are comfortable with going to bed.

You should also consider taking a yoga class it will/should help you learn relaxation techniques and help with your RLS.

In the mean time start telling yourself the above statement. Burn some incense like Lavender, or one that says relaxation. You could help yourself by listening to white noise music. Something instrumental, quiet and calming. All these suggestions will help. The most important one is stop telling yourself you are afraid to go to sleep, you are setting yourself up to fail. Instead, say: I am comfortable with going to bed. Do not use any negative words like, I am not afraid to go to bed. The not is a negative keeping the same mode of thought. So make every word positive. Sweet dreams!
